Basilica of St. Mary

The Alexandria AOH was originally founded in the parish of St. Mary’s in Alexandria, Virginia. The Very Reverend Edward Hathway, Rector of the Basilica, also serves as Chaplain to the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Alexandria. St. Mary’s is the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Virginia. Colonel John Fitzgerald, an Irish immigrant, was a founding member of St. Mary’s. Fitzgerald was also an aide and friend to George Washington, and Washington himself donated funds to help build the initial church structure. In 2018, St. Mary’s was named a minor basilica. It is the first basilica in Northern Virginia and the first basilica in the Diocese of Arlington. To read more about the history of the parish and about John Fitzgerald’s contribution to Irish Catholic history in Virginia, please visit the St. Mary’s Basilica website.
